Do You Need a Permit for a Dumpster in Summerville or Moncks Corner, SC?

The short version: if your roll-off dumpster sits on your own driveway or private property, most Lowcountry towns do not require a permit. If the container has to sit on a public street, sidewalk, or right-of-way, you'll usually need a short-term encroachment or placement permit from the town or county.

Permit rules are set locally, so they vary between Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties and between the municipalities inside them. The notes below are a starting point — always confirm with your specific town or HOA before delivery day.

If there's no room on the driveway and the dumpster must sit on the street, you'll typically need a placement permit, plus reflective markers or cones for visibility. Summerville, for example, requires a permit for placement on a public street or right-of-way.

Per the Town of Summerville, a residential dumpster of 30 cubic yards or less placed on private property generally does not require a permit, but placement on a public street or right-of-way does — with a permit fee of $50 and an application submitted at least three days before the requested placement date.
